Dance Intensives have returned to Roxy!
Every year, returning Dance Team Members, plus lots of new faces, come to the Roxy Performing Arts Center (RPAC) to try some combination of Broadway and SYTYCD-quality dance techniques and styles taught by some of the top dancers and dance instructors from around the U.S., including Miami. For the first couple of weeks of the Miami-Dade County School Year, from August 23 to September 2, The Roxy Theatre Group has put together a slew of dance workshops that will push new and returning dancers to their physical and creative limits, testing what they have learned in their time here at RPAC and in the various magnet and dance programs offered in the Magic City.
Students from the ages of 7 and up find themselves jamming to Hip Hop rhythms while attempting to master the swagger they want in their style, then later develop their strength and flexibility in a Ballet Intensive while focusing to perfect their relevés or master a tour jeté. The following hour, these same students will test their interpretive skills while correctly executing a complex set of isolations and free-falling jumps keeping to the eclectic style of a Contemporary piece, followed by a lesson in Ballroom dance styles like the rumba, swing and the tango…and that’s just day one!
The kids work up a sweat and they love it, even when complaining about sore muscles. We know this because they return the following day for another round of challenging Intensives. We are glad to see so many young people embracing the performing arts and are most grateful to the parents who support them by driving them to their classes and reinforcing their work with positive words. While they may not be aware of it, these kids are expanding their bodies and minds by engaging in healthful activities and interacting with various types of people and attempting feats they may once have been afraid to tackle, all while thinking they’re just having a good time dancing!
Check out the good time in our Dance Intensives Photo Gallery!
