THE ROXY THEATRE GROUP’S AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM PRESENTED HONK!, JR.

MIAMI, FL (June 1, 2010) The Roxy Theatre Group’s after school care program, presented the musical Honk!, Jr. on Thursday, May 27, 2010 to magnificent success.  Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless fairytale, The Ugly Duckling, this musical adaptation featured classic themes such as, self-discovery and inner strength.  The Roxy Theatre Group, (RTG) is a non-profit arts organization for children.

Over 50 children ages 5 to 14, representing 40 elementary and middle schools portrayed one of literatures most beloved and well known tales.  In rehearsal since February, the children personified the animal characters with much spirit and conviction.  The children played an array of wild life, including ducks, geese, bull frogs and swans.

“Having my first solo ever and such a major opportunity to act, sing and dance, has been challenging but I had a blast. I learned that what a person is made of on the inside is what counts the most,” said Javier Mederos,10, who played the lead role of Ugly. Mederos is in the 5^th grade at Miami Coral Park Elementary and has participated in RTG’s after school care program for two years.  His older sister Karina,13, played the mischievous Cat who chases after Ugly in Honk!,Jr.

“Directing this production has been an educational and fulfilling experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a mature and professional group of youth. They have changed my life,” said Andrew Rodriguez-Triana, After School Director and Director for Honk!,Jr.

“Being in this show has taught me that if you want something with all of your heart to go for it no matter what!  The show has helped me really appreciate all of the wonderful things moms do for us,” said Isis Alvarez,9,  who played the role of the mother duck Ida. Alvarez is in the 3^rd grade at Banyon Elementary and has participated in RTG’s after school care for two years.
